Mozart’s last, great work, his Requiem, was tragically left incomplete when the composer himself died. However, the power and beauty of this famous piece has ensured its immortality, not least through the play and movie Amadeus. ABC Classics is proud to release this new, period-instrument recording of this masterpiece, performed by a stellar line-up of Australasian musicians. Alongside the Requiem, tracks include Mozart’s sublime soprano cantata Exsultate, jubilate (with its famous ‘Alleluia’ finale), sung by Sara Macliver; and the exquisite choral ‘Ave Verum Corpus’. A must-have for any record collection, beautifully recorded with the latest technology.
A tremendously vivacious and life-affirming performance of Exsultate, jubilate provides a dramatic contrast [with the Requiem]. There’s some enchanting orchestra playing, and Walker proves himself a hugely sensitive accompanist to a much more roundly voiced Macliver. Gloriously buoyant and delicately poised, she shows impeccable and effortless control.
